The North Umpqua Canyon contains millions of years of geologic activity to include the remains of volcanoes and lava flows.
It is possible to stop at turnouts on Hwy 138 between miles 51.25 and 53.45 and view prominent rock spires, pillars, and outcroppings of various shapes.

Soda Springs is the site of columnar basalts along the edge of the North Umpqua River. The various colors are from lichen growing on the rock.
