Osha Trail

I took a short hike near the town of Cloudcroft. Being amid pine and fir trees was a nice change of pace after so many days in desert climates.

Patches of snow and mud were present, and the midday temperature was still in the 40s.

Mexican Canyon Trestle

This railroad trestle was restored in 2010 and is the sole survivor of the 58 timber frame trestles on the 26-mile route that climbed 4,000 feet between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft. It was originally built in 1899 and abandoned in 1947.

The railroad spur into the Sacramento Mountains was first used to access timber for lumber and later by passengers, mostly tourists, seeking to escape the heat of the valley floor.
