The Sinagua people built this masonry structure on a ledge in a limestone cliff in the Verde Valley. It was later named Montezuma Castle by Europeans. Another dwelling known as Castle A is located at the base of the cliff.

They used the nearby Beaver Creek to irrigate crops. They also hunted animals attracted by the creek and gathered plants from its banks. The Sinagua abandoned their homes and left the area around 1425 for unknown reasons.
