White River Falls State Park - Tygh Valley, OR

This is a little gem of a stop a few miles off Hwy 197 between The Dalles and Bend.

Next to the parking lot is an overlook of the beautiful White River Falls as they plunge between the canyon's walls.

A building, pipes, and other components of one of Oregon's first hydroelectric plants that operated from 1901 until 1963 can still be seen.

If you take the short trail from the overlook down to the river's edge, you're afforded great views of the falls from several different perspectives.

You are also able to walk downstream along the river and see more of it and the surrounding canyon.

I have a genuine appreciation for these falls and their rocky environment.

Although I am now in the drier, eastern side of Oregon, it isn't as if it doesn't ever rain here. After coming back from viewing the falls and river, I was sitting in Odyssey having lunch when it began to rain fairly hard. It turned out I had timed my visit perfectly as the rain lasted for about two hours. Some of the other visitors weren't so lucky as they were caught out in the downpour. And by the looks of things, many weren't dressed for it. I know I would have gotten drenched if the rains had come earlier.
